St. Augustine Grass

St. Augustine is generally a coarser grass than some of the other Southern lawn grasses. It is tough, aggressive, dense and loves hot temperatures. St. Augustine Grass

At a glance:

Tough, coarse, mat-forming grass
Tolerates moderate shade
Spreads quickly and vigorously by runners ("stolons")
Can be sodded or plugged
Mowed at approximately 2.5 - 3.5" depending on whether it's growing in full sun or shade. Allow to grow higher in shady areas if possible. Never reduce the height or your lawn by more than one-third.
Needs about 1" of water per week during the growing season. Water deeply and infrequently. For example, it is better to apply 1" of water in a single day than to water 1/4" 4 times a week.
St. Augustine lawns do not enter a deep dormancy during the winter months. Be aware of winter dry spells and water if the top 1/2" of soil is dry to the touch. This will prevent the plants from dying during the winter
If temperatures are expected to drop below 20 degrees, water the lawn. A wet soil will freeze and keep soil temperatures close to 32 degrees. A dry soil will drop to the 20 degrees and damage or kill the roots.
